What is the Gateway Readers Award?

Each year, a committee within the Missouri Association of School Librarians nominates a list of the 15 best new books for high school students. In March of the following year, high school students who have read at least three of the 15 nominated books can vote for their favorite. The book which receives the most votes in state-wide voting is declared that year's winner!

The LSHS LMC promotes the Gateway Readers in a number of ways.

*The Gateway Readers letterjacket patch. Students who read all 15 nominated books by April 1 (and who fill out the tracking paperwork so we can order the right number of patches) receive the patch at our library awards ceremony in May.

*Informative Web pages with details about each nominated book for the year. Visit the pages for each year with descriptions of each title and in most cases a book trailer produced at LSHS LMC. 2008/09 Nominees Web Page - 2009/2010 Nominees Web Page - 2010/2011 - 2011/2012 See past Gateway winners and nominees at the MASL Website.

*Each year we purchase 10 to 15 copies of each book and promote them in the LMC. These books are generally in heavy circulation, and some titles have waiting lists.

*A number of teachers have projects and reading units that incorporate Gateway Readers.

*We have several hundred student Podcasts which discuss Gateway-nominated books online.

*The LMC has created a number of "Book Trailers," or short promo movies, about several Gateway-nominated books. All the 2009 through 2012 nominees have a 60 second or longer trailer, and several books from previous years have trailers as well.

*We have created posters for the LMC that we're happy to share. These print at high resolution up to 24x36 and feature the book covers, titles, and authors.
