Lee's Summit High School Library Media Center FAQ

LSHS's new librarians for 2013/2014 are:
Jennifer Coleman (jennifer.coleman@leesummit.k12.mo.us, or after July 31, 2013 986-2027)

and

Allison Donahay (after July 31, 2013: 986-2031 allison.donahay@leesummit.k12.mo.us)

Both librarians will begin at LSHS in late July, 2013.

The LSHS Paul C. Coverdell Library Media Center is located in Building A, on the far Southeast corner of campus, near the Tiger Post.

We are open 6:45 AM to 3:00PM when school is in session. On district-scheduled half-days we close at noon.

Circulation desk: (816) 986-2025 Mary Jane Steins, library clerk (beginning Oct 15, 2012)
Beginning July 31, 2013: LMS Allison Donahay 816.986.2031 LMS Jennifer Coleman 816.986.2027

Circulation Policy: Students may check out up to five items at any time and renew those items one time, provided no one is waiting for the material. Students may request a hold on any material they are permitted to check out.

Books: 30 days
Periodicals: 1 week
Reference: overnight or 30 days, depending on resource
FlipVideo cameras: 3 days
DVD/VHS and other media equipment: staff only

Overdue materials:

Overdue notices are sent to students through classroom teachers as well as through student imail. Students with severely overdue materials will not be permitted to check out new materials until the overdue items are returned. If materials are not returned by the end of the schoool year, the LMC places a hold on the student account which prevents students from enrolling the following school year or participating in graduation ceremonies. Please note that we always prefer to receive the materials back rather than payment to replace the materials.

Students will not be permitted to participate in graduation ceremonies if they have overdue books. Materials can be returned to any school library in the LSR7 district.

Overdue books are assessed a 5 cents per day fine. Students will be blocked from checking out new materials until the book that caused the fine is returned or if more than $10 in unpaid fines have accumulated.

Printing and Copies:

Students may print from any library computer (excluding Macs). The printer in the main library is AOpac. These pages are free, but we ask that you only print exactly what you need, and only print the "printer friendly" pages that do not have graphics.

We also offer a color laser printer in the LMC. These cost 50 cents per page. This printer must be added to your computer before you can print, so please ask any LMC staff member for assistance. You must have the printer installed with each new log-on, so even if you've printed in color before, if you've logged off since then, we'll need to add it.

Copies are 10 cents a page for black and white pages. The copier is near Mr. Russell's office, in front of the Think Tank conference room.

History

The Library Media Center is named for Paul C. Coverdell, who attended LSHS from 1954 to 1957. The LMC opened in its present location during Coverdell's senior year, when Coverdell was president of the student council. At various points in his life, Coverdell worked as a Georgia state senator, director of the Peace Corps, created World Wise Schools, and represented Georgia as a United States Senator. A group of his fellow LSHS classmates worked to create a scholarship and name the library media center in his honor. The dedication ceremony occurred April 29, 2005. The LMC, while slightly larger due to the incorporation of former classrooms, remains much the same as it was in Coverdell's day.

At one point, Lee's Summit High School had two libraries and three librarians. Once Lee's Summit North and West opened and Lee's Summit High School had fewer students, the LSHS LMC consolidated to one library with two librarians, a secretary and a clerk. In 2010, the library secretary position was eliminated at LSHS (it was eliminated at the other two schools in 2011). In 2010 and 2011 two paid students (twelfth graders participating in the Supervised Business Experience program) assisted the remaining clerk and librarians. In 2012/2013 that was reduced to a single SBE worker.

Additionally, the LMC has up to eight student assistants a year. This is a for-credit class that counts as an elective. Students can choose to enroll in the 0 hour section before school to earn an additional credit during the day. The selection process is rigorous, but open to any student returning to LSHS. Print an application and return it well before the posted deadline. We accept overdue books, but we do not accept any late applications.
