Higher Level (HL) v. Standard Level (SL)

There are two levels of IB classes and IB exams, Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL). The difference comes down to the breadth of material covered not the expectations. The IB recommends that classes taken at Higher Level (HL) have a minimum of 240 teaching hours. These classes at LSHS are offered over two years and include English, History, Chemistry, Biology, Theatre Arts, and Visual Arts. For Standard Level (SL) classes the IB recommends 150 teaching hours. These classes at LSHS include Psychology, ITGS, and Music as well as Mathematics and Foreign Language. Generally colleges/universities will grant credit for scores of 5 or better on Higher Level exams. For a college's specific policy refer it's website (see the Links page for some colleges/universities in Missouri & Kansas).

 Grading

Students are assessed based on a set of external standards established by the IB. These standards apply to students all across the world. Teachers and IB examiners work together to ensure that students have ample opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned. Responsibility for all academic judgments about the quality of candidates’ work rests with over 5,000 IB examiners worldwide, led by chief examiners. Students receive a score ranging from a low of 1 to a high of 7. These scores are determined based on several components. Generally 20-30% of a student's exam score in a subject will come from an internally assessed assignment/project designated by IB. These range from oral presentations to lab notebooks. Teachers submit these marks prior to the beginning of formal testing in May. In addition teachers must submit samples of student work to IB for moderation to ensure they are accurately applying IB assessment criteria.

The results of the IB Exams become available at the beginning of July. Students may access their scores via http://results.ibo.org using a PIN number supplied by the IB Coordinator. A student's results may, at their request, also be sent to their college/university at no charge.
